Stuttgart International Airport
Flughafenstraße 32, 70629 Stuttgart, GermanyFacts and History about Stuttgart International Airport
Stuttgart Airport (Flughafen Stuttgart in German) is the international airport serving Stuttgart, the capital of the state of Baden-Wúrttemberg located in Germany's southwest corner.
Stuttgart Airport's IATA code is STR and the ICAPO code is EDDS. The airport was formerly known as Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport (Flughafen Stuttgart-Echterdingen in German). The airport's official name has changed several times, including being Flughafen Stuttgart - Manfred Rommel Flughafen after the former Stuttgart mayor Manfred Rommel, but as a means of branding and corporate design the name was officially changed to Stuttgart Airport in 2016.
The airport is operated by Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH which is owned by the state of Baden-Wúrttemberg (65%) and the city of Stuttgart (35%).
STR is located 10 km/6.2 mi in a straight line south of Stuttgart, driving distance is however 13 km/8.1 mi. It lies on the boundary between Stuttgart and the towns of Leinfelden-Echterdingen and Filderstadt.
The airport has one concrete surfaced runway that measures 3,345 m/10,974 ft in length and it also has a concrete surfaced helipad.
Stuttgart Airport was the sixth busiest German airport in 2018 with 11,832,634 passengers coming through it that year. A number that increased to 12,721,441 passengers in 2019. The airport serves as a hub for airlines Condor, Eurowings and TUI fly Deutschland.
STR was built in 1939 in replacement for Böblingen Airport. As with many other airports in Europe it was in the use of the United States Army during the second World War, in 1945 in the case of STR, but it was returned to German authorities in 1948 although the two shared the runway and the facilities for the duration of the Cold War.
The runway was extended first in 1948, again in 1961, and yet again in 1996 to the current length.
The Terminals at Stuttgart Airport
The original terminal was built in 1938 and it was replaced with four passenger terminals in 2004. The current total capacity of the terminals is around 12 million passengers annually.
The four passenger terminals are separate but still connected with each other. They all have their own separate check-in facilities and entrances, but they share some common areas on landside and they share one single airside area.
The terminals have a total of 8 jet bridges and 24 bus-boarding stands.
The terminals are named 1-4 and Terminals 1, 2 and 3 share a roof while Terminal 4 is separate but connected with the other three via a walkway. Terminal 1 is located to the west and Terminal 4 to the east with Terminals 2 and 3 in between them.
Terminal 1 has a large main hall area and 50 check-in counters and it is mainly used by Eurowings and Turkish Airlines.
Terminal 2 is a smaller area with 9 check-in counters and a security checkpoint, and it sits in between Terminals 1 and 2. It is mainly used by Lufthansa and Star Alliance partners.
Terminal 3 also has a large main hall on landside, as well as 39 check-in counters. It is mainly used by TUIfly and KLM as well as several other airlines.
Terminal 4 is very basically equipped and features 17 check-in counters and it is used for holiday charter operations. It was announced in March 2018 that it will be entirely rebuilt and expanded in the coming years.
