How to get to Stuttgart International Airport by Train

Once you arrive at Stuttgart Airport (STR), please remember to retrieve your entire luggage from the baggage claim area before exiting to locate your choice of transfer from the airport. There are several options for transferring to Stuttgart city center as well as options for transferring to other destinations locally, nationally, or internationally. The transfer options available to Stuttgart include rental cars, taxis, buses and trains, and also trams.

Stuttgart Airport has 4 terminals with their own separate facilities, but they are all connected with each other and they all share one airside area.

Trains at Stuttgart Airport

Stuttgart Airport has two train stations, called Stuttgart Flughafen/Messe, located in the terminal complex, both are underground. One is located underneath Terminal 1 and the other is located underneath Terminal 3.

The airport is directly connected with Stuttgart's main train station, Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof, which is located in the heart and center of Stuttgart city. The train ride between the two locations takes just under 30 minutes one way.

The trains that frequent the airport are S-Bahn lines, the city train lines. During weekday peak hours they run approximately every 15 minutes, during the weekends they run every 30 minutes, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights they run once per hour.

The trains do not depart 24/7, there are a few hours during the night that they don't run. During those hours there is a night bus departing from the Stuttgart Airport Busterminal located diagonally across the road from Terminal 4.

The journey between the airport and the central station in Stuttgart requires a 2 zone ticket.

There are two S-Bahn lines that serve the airport, the S2 Schorndorf, and the S3 Backnang.

Tickets can be purchased at the train stations.

Trams at Stuttgart Airport

The airport also has a tram service connection with the center of Stuttgart via pram line U6 from/to Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (Stuttgart Central Station).

The tram stop is located opposite the terminal building, behind the car parks and across Flughafenstraße. It will take approximately 5 minutes to walk from the terminal to the tram stop.

The tram journey between the two locations is more or less the same as the train ride, around 30 minutes.

Trams run every 10 minutes during peak hours and daytime during weekends.

The ticket needs to be for 2 tariff zones to get from the airport to central Stuttgart.
